Fieldtrips at University

Hiya all. I am just interested to hear what field trips people have attended in different Universities. In the University of Liverpool we go to Snowdon for two days, Pembrokeshire for 9 days, Cantabrian mountains for 2 weeks, Donegal for 2 weeks, and Dorset for one week.

Where have/ are you going in your University?

I've never been to

I've never been to university but I've organised loads of geology field trips in Cornwall, Wales, the Pennines, etc and usually there's a few university students who come along.

OK Ali, How about Welshpool

OK Ali,

How about Welshpool in a fortnights time?  We were hoping that Javi-geo (see GR members list) was coming over from Spain for it, but I don't think he can make it

Sadly, I won't be on that one as I go for an operation on my foot Monday week.  I'm having my toes amputated so I can stand near to the bar!

Next one is first w/end of March (need to check that) taking 6th formers from a Glos school to (only at thinkingwheretogo stage so far) Anglesea and the Harlech Dome.  I will be hobbling along on that one, as assisstant geology tutor and spare minibus driver (my old A level tutor now teaches at Sir Thomas Rich School in Glos) However, since this is a school trip you do require a CRB to be allowed near these strapping 6' lads! Bloody silly, but there you are. Most of them would be delighted to be molested (although not by me I hasten to add!)

But you would be welcome to come on the gold paning weekend.  It is Devon/Cornwall sort of area.  The actual location is top secret.  I don't even know yet and I'm organising it!!!!  Gus wants to come, and I think Jenny expressed an interest, although unless Ben capitulates I feel she may have other things on her mind.  It started with a request from the organiser of the Swanage Folk Festival (don't ask - its a long story) and I believe there may be others from a field trip group I run who will want to go.

Gus, now I've got a date for the op, I'm looking towards April perhaps for this panning trip.  If I don't do it then, I will be tied up with all these other shows until September. How are you fixed?

John, April doesn't look too

John, April doesn't look too good.  I'm in East Yorkshire 12th to 23rd on a bird survey and my eldest daughter is getting married at the end of the month.  September would work better for me.

OK mate.

In fact I was talking to a neighbour (retired doctor ) who seems to think that walking on it inside a couple of months might be unwise.

Got to go.  Will get back to you soon Ali.

Hey, I'm at Aberystwyth and first year we go to Anglesey. Second year we're in Cornwall I think and for the third year we go to Ireland.

Have the first one in 3 weeks time and quite looking forward to it, although I'll be living in a caravan for 8 people for a week... haha.

Well all those places havea

Well all those places havea fair variety of rocks.  Where exactly in Ireland?   Love Connemara  really wild and desolate (forget clubbin' - get into traditional Irish pubs!) and the metamorphism is great! You'll want to bring so much back!

I think I shall be over there with A level students next Easter.

I went to Plymouth and we

I went to Plymouth and we had a variety of field work locations; Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Spain, Sicily, Death Valley, Cyrpus, Ireland, Iceland and Morrocco (I didn't go to all of these places, some where optional, and some only the Physical Geographers got to go on, and others only the Geologists).

My favourite was by far my 6 weeks mapping camp in Aliaga, Spain. Fantastic place, great rocks and an abundance of fossils.  In the way of Life however there is nowt. A couple of houses and a bakery in someones house. We also had to camp in a dried out river bed for 6 weeks, so that was pretty uncomfortable!

At first you Mafic I'm basicaly intrusive, but when you get to know me you'll realise I'm orthogneiss.
