Submitted by al8301 on Tue, 04/08/2008 - 15:23.I'm not directly involved in any organising for this, although I do know some of the people involved, but I thought it would be worthwhile to advertise it all the same. I didn't want to put contact details for the organisers on the open forum so please contact me (or reply to the topic) if you are interested and I'll pass the contact details along.
Are you are a pre-chartered geologist in the Midlands looking for support and advice from others in the same position but in a sociable and friendly environment? Then we may have the answer!
The inaugural meeting of the YGG (Young Geoscientist Group) is being held on the 12th May 2008 at The University of Birmingham. The group is aimed at early career geoscientists employed in all fields of geology, and will provide a forum for support and discussion. The Group also aims to provide information and support for those wishing to achieve chartered status. The group is initially starting in the Midlands and national roll-out is planned for 2009.
Meetings and events are proposed to be a mix of presentations from key note speakers, YGG member presentations, discussion, poster events and regular socials. There is also a Facebook group for members to use for support and discussion http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=22686129232 . Meetings and events will be held at several locations across the midlands throughout the year.
The first meeting, on May 12th, will be held in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of Birmingham. A pre-meeting reception with finger buffet starts at 6.30pm in the Lapworth Museum. The main meeting will be held from 7pm-8pm. The meeting will be followed by a wine reception in the Lapworth Museum and a curry and beer in Selly Oak afterwards. If you wish to attend then please make yourself known so that approximate numbers can be worked out and catered for in advance.
