Tewkesbury Medieval Fayre - Gloucestershire

This weekend I am at the Tewkesbury Medieval Fayre commemorating the Battle of Tewkesbury 1471 - one of the bigger battles of the War of the Roses.  The Yorkists won it back then, but they don't always on the re-enactment  (on both Sat & Sun - provided there's enough soldiers left!).

The traders are divided up into authentic (old fashioned tents/canopies and selling English long bows, arrows, mead, armour, chain mail, and so on) and the 'plastic campers' selling a host of other things...... like minerals, fossils, stone gifts etc.  That's the part where I am.

I hope to have my pet pterodactyl flying above my canopy.  If you visit please come and say hello.

Hello

Hi John,

I haven't been abroad on the boards for quite some time now, although I've been trying to keep on top of the spamming, with mixed results!

How did the Fayre go? Was it busy?

I'm learning to drive at the moment, so hopefully soon Jenny and I will be able to attend a GR meet more easily!

Regards,

Ben.

Good to hear from you Ben.

Good to hear from you Ben.  You certainly seem to have got rid of a lot of the nonsense people put on the site.  It gets my back up so much I don't think I would ever buy something on principle! Although I suspect a lot may be a scam merely to get e-mail and other personal data.

Yes the medieval fayre was quite busy but so hot!!!  In fact it was cooler out in the sun than inside the tents, so people tended to stay outside unfortunately.  I would never make my fortune there, but I break even and really enjoy it.  They expect you to 'dress up'  (supposed to be 15th C - but I wear a spoof Chelsea Pensions outfit).  I managed it for all day Saturday, but I couldn't face it again on Sunday.  Back to shorts T shirt and Jesus boots.

I have to say I pitied the re-enactors in either armour, chain or wool.  It would have been bad enough just strolling around, but the battle must have been purgatory.

Very different from last year where it rained so much some campers had to be moved as the river was going to burst its banks.  It was a sea of mud.  This year they were giving out warning about drinking sufficient water and being careful of the dried out grass because of the fire risk.

Just remember that driving is one of the most complex things a human can learn, because even once you have passed your test you have only reached the minimum standard required to drive on the roads unsupervised.  You will be learning for the rest of your life.  That's what my old man said to me when I passed my test....and he was absolutely right.

There are always new rules and regulations coming in. You would be amazed how many people I meet in the course of my work, who want an HGV licence, and have never read the Highway Code since the day they passed their test.  Many are unaware that the Highway Code was revised about 8 years ago and the new one has around 50 amendments!  Mind you it shows in their driving.  They simply have no road craft.

Best of luck!

I'll send you a PM shortly
