Regarding petrophysics - it is common to use acoustic and density measurements of rocks to ascertain their mechanical properties and strength.

The compressional wave velocity of sound through the rock, and the shear wave velocity, and this with the density of the rock to compute.

I'm interested in learning about other scientific ways to determine the mechanical properties and strength of rocks.
