Probably an unanswerable question....
Fri, 07/22/2005 - 07:59Looking around I found:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geology_of_India
http://www.geoahead.com/strati/india/index.cfm
http://www.hydroexplore.com/geology.htm
http://www.indianchild.com/geography_of_india.htm
Most of which I then ignored (but they should give you the primary rock types...)...
The area of India is 2,973,190 km2
Given it has some thick crust in the North and the rest will be "average", let's say the crust is 40km thick. This gives us a volume of
118,927,600 m3
Let's say an average density of 3 kg/m3, gives us:
356,782,800 kg
I think India may need to lose weight....
This is just a ballpark figure and includes a lot of assuptions, but it's not wildly inacurate, I don't think.
Hope it helps!
Jon
Thank you!
Sun, 07/24/2005 - 16:34Thanks to you both for your geological insight, I only wanted a ball-park so that if I ever got published, people (well, lets be more specific - Geologists) didn't go "There's no way India weighs that much" etc etc and I have lots of letters implying I am a cretin. Which I am, but I dont like being told it.
Many thanks,
Rich

Probably an unanswerable question....
Submitted by Bewaretheducks on Thu, 07/21/2005 - 17:30.Hello everyone.
I'm writing a novel where by I've snookered myself with a fact i'd like to use, I wonder if anyone here can help.
Does anyone happen to know, or know if its even possible, to "weigh" a country? i'm specifically looking for India's weight, obviously a ball park realistic figure will suffice. Also, dont suppose anyone knows what the primary rock type is for india?
Just to put it in context, the sentence goes something like:
(400 gigatonnes) of (granite) makes its way slowly through the indian ocean.
I'm attempting to describe india's collision with mainland asia in accurate, if slightly laymans, terms. I've got an a-level understanding of geology so you dont have to simplify terms for me,
Thank you for your help.
Rich.
