Can anyone tell me what this mineral is?

I came across this rock when it was included as part of an auction. The surface is dull black in color. The rock is pyramid shaped with the dimensions 5"x5"x5". Compared to other rocks of its size it is extremely heavy. Total weight is about 18lbs. After chipping a corner of the rock off, the interior revealed a lustrous, metallic, silver color. It is very hard and scratches a knife blade. Here's a link to some pictures.

I appreciate any info.
Thanks

It may actually be a metal and not a mineral at all... Does the exposed surface weather back to black again fairly quickly or is it still just as shiny now as when you broke off the piece in the first place?

If it's not a metal then it's probably a metal ore. I couldn't really say which one though without some more description! Can you see any planes of weakness or fracture in it? If you've got any dilute hydrochloric acid then try dropping some of that on the exposed face and see if anything happens.

Well the chip I broke off about three weeks ago is still a shiny, grainy, silver. I don't have any HCL nor do I have a steak plate. Who could I take the rock to in Los Angeles to help me identify it?
Thanks for all your comments,

Hi

If you are in Los Angeles, maybe you could try to find out if there are any geology groups in the area, or maybe even the USGS would be able to identify it.

Thanks,

Tom
