Strange rock formation

I live in Windhoek and I am not very familiar with geology. I came across this formation in Windhoek (Khomas-Hochland):

Unfortunately I did not put something down to indicate the size. However, I estimate that the leaf in the right corner on top is about 3 cm long, the blades of grass in the centre are betwen 10 -15 cm long.

I was fascinated by the criss cross pattern an the smaller rocks embedded in the solid looking black material.

Does anybody have an explanation?

This is a bit tricky. Much

This is a bit tricky. Much depends on what the rock actually is. You say its black, and I'm wondering if it is a basalt with included xenoliths of country rock, and the lines are simply cooling cracks.

What do you others reckon?
