Any Estwing...
Mon, 10/17/2011 - 22:48is a good hammer. The one above is a pick used more for "hard rock" geology. They also make a chisel point(brick masons hammer) for sedimentary rocks, and also a tinners hammer that is similar to the chisel hammer.
I think most geology majors start off with the pick, but I haven't used mine in years. My chisel point, though, is well worn.
I've had the best results
Tue, 10/18/2011 - 11:24I've had the best results from a 4lb or 6lb lumphammer (depends on how puny you're feeling) and a variety of cold chisels as you can be more accurate. Be careful though - someone I knew attempted to smack a lump of ore in half with just the hammer and it bounced off and hit him on the forehead, rendering him momentarily speechless (which was actually a good side effect!).

that's brilliant, thanks! I will go for the pick. One more question what weight should I go for? there is a 22oz long handle and a 14oz and 22 oz normal handle, what difference does the weight make and which is best?
Thanks again!

I would recommend Northern
Wed, 10/19/2011 - 16:07I would recommend Northern Geological Supplies in Bolton. He has a good range of hammers including the expensive, but generally lightweight Erstwing.

Just one thing. Don't
Thu, 10/20/2011 - 22:16Just one thing.
Don't forget Wordsworth didn't like geologists in his beloved Lake District and wrote...
"He who doth with pocket hammer smite,
Protruding rock or luckless stone,
And bending picks it up to classify it
With some barbaric name, then hurries on"
or close to that. Can't remember the title I'm afraid.

Right. I'm going off line
Fri, 10/21/2011 - 11:57Right. I'm going off line for the next 12 days while I help the Spanish economy out by drinking copiuos quantities of viono collapso y ceveza.
I believe Javi-Geo is meeting up with us at some point - he said he would try.
By the way his thesis - in English - is at

- so he tells me. I must look at that next.
Nearly forgot - The Geologist Associations Festival of Geology is Saturday 5th November (11 - 4) at University College London. Free entry. If you do come along, come and say hello.
Bye for now.

a little help with a rock hammer
Submitted by lucas north on Mon, 10/17/2011 - 12:21.Hello,
My girlfriend has just started a geology degree at university and she will need a rock hammer for field trips etc. I want to get her a good hammer as a surprise but as a computing undergrad rocks are not my specialist subject I'm afraid. I was hoping that you kind people may be able to give me a bit of advice, I've had a look on the net and Estwing seem to be the dominant premium brand, with pick ended hammers going for around 40 quid.
Could someome please tell me if the attached picture is a good hammer for field trip activities and if not what is?
Thanks!Lucas
