The advertising bots seem to be getting more and more frequent. I wonder if it would be an idea to screen memberships. I remember there's a function somewhere on this type of message board which makes it so the administrator has to verify a membership before an account is activated. Might be useful until another solution can be found.

That might be a potential solution. Other things I could try are:
o Add some moderators: they can delete the spam on sight
o try a few more phpbb modifications that might help.

I'll try the latter first (probably tonight) and see how things go.

Well, Jon, that´s the solution we are using to lead our spanish website on!

I think that it´s a very big deal, but if there are a few moderators, you could solve the problem easily when you and Katie are away. So it´s up to you.

I'm sure that there are a number of us who are prepared to moderate if wanted

I would be happy to. Although I think of myself more as an excellent than a moderate.

Hi Katie and Jon;

Here in Canada, I'm 8 hours removed from the GeologyRocks command centre. I'm just finishing my supper while you in Europe are dreaming about field trips and rocks. I visit GeologyRocks most days between 7:00 and 9:00 pm, my time. I'm often the first to see these trashy posts.

If there is a way, I can at least re-direct that spam as I discover it.

Happy New Year

Mike

Thanks for all the offers to be moderators! I've installed some anti-bot modifications to the registration process. This should stop all the bots registering and posting. A human can still get past, but a human can only spam so much Smiling face

If this doesn't work, I think I might take people up on the offer to be moderate Winking

I was just thinking about asking a similar question (about if something could be done about these spammers). Glad to see you guys on top of it already and working towards getting it back to the secure, no-nonsense (ha) site it was and will be.

Well, the modifications were done over a week ago and no spam posts since then...so far so good!

Thanks for the offer Spam

Thanks for the offer Smiling face

Spam is now under control now and is automatically "unpublished". The comments above referred to the old version of the site which ran the popular forum software phpBB. Everything is sorted now Smiling face
