Fossil Hunting in the Pentlands

The Pentlands are a series of hills just south of Edinburgh. They consist of volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Devonian and Silurian age. The sediments are both terrestrial and marine, with the oldest being the marine Silurian.  These Silurian rocks are the most interesting feature, forming three inliers or "windows". One of these inliers, the North Esk Inlier, is very interesting both geologically and palaeontologically.

Edinburgh Rock: The Geology of Lothian

This book details the geological history of the Lothian region of Scotland. Within this area lie some world-reknowned geological localities from Siccar Point where James Hutton realised the need for "deep time", to the Granton shoreline, on the north of Edinburgh, where the first conodont animal was discovered (by one of the book authors, although this isn't mentioned in the text). The book begins with a brief look at geological theory, ranging from sedimentology to igneous petrology.  read more »

Introducing Geology: A guide to the world of rocks

This book is a succinct introduction to geology, covering a diverse set of subjects in a relatively short number of pages. The book is aimed at people who have become interested in geology, but have no formal training, and so serves to give the reader some basic knowledge. It is divided into 11 chapters and a glossary, each colour-coded with "tabs" so you can easily find a section. The glossary contains descriptions of terms that are highlighted throughout the text and is a very useful resource.  read more »
